How to Improve Foot and Leg Pain with Prescription Orthotics
If you are experiencing pain related to your foot, ankle prescription orthotics may be the solution to your discomfort. They can usually be part of the recommended treatment plan for common foot problems like: heel pain, bunions, shin splints, metatarsalgia.
There are two types of orthotic inserts: Functional & Accommodative.
Functional orthotics are used to treat foot issues caused by abnormal movement such as, pronation, shin splints, tendinitis and muscle fatigue. If your feet over pronate (rotate inward while walking) or supinate (leaning outwards while walking) then a functional orthotic would be used to help align your foot. Functional orthotics are made from semi-rigid plastics to help keep your feet in proper form.
Accommodative orthotics are used to treat plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot ulcers and painful calluses. They are made from a more flexible cushioned material, with added cushioning and can also be designed to help relieve specific pressure points, which in turn help to reduce callus build up.
Whether you need functional or accommodative orthotics, a detail prescription is written to select materials for the orthotics, accommodations, and order detailed adjustments to align the foot properly.

Once you receive your custom orthotics, it is important to wear them as directed by your doctor.
You can expect orthotics to last 3 to 5 years. We recommend to have your orthotics checked every one to two years to check them for wear and tear. At some point orthotics can be refurbished to increase the comfort feel, and to extend the lifetime. Call our office at 707-578-1222 if you are interested in orthotics.
